Privacy Policy

Portover is an offline contacts backup and phone-transfer app published by Hugo Software. This policy explains, plainly, what the app does and does not do with your data.

The short version

Portover does not collect personal data. We run no server for this app, and Portover's own code makes no network requests — backing up, comparing, exporting and restoring all work in airplane mode. There is no account, no sign-up, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising and no third-party trackers. Your contacts and your backup files stay on your phone unless you choose to send or save them somewhere yourself.

Permissions

Portover asks for these runtime permissions, each only when you use the feature that needs it:

  • Contacts (READ_CONTACTS), read-only — to read the contacts on your device and turn them into backup files, to compare a backup with your phone, and to find duplicates. Portover does not request WRITE_CONTACTS. It cannot add, edit or delete a single contact on your phone. When you restore contacts, your phone's own Contacts app does the importing.
  • Calendar (READ_CALENDAR), read-only — only if you back up your calendar. Portover does not request WRITE_CALENDAR.
  • Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS) — only if you turn on automatic backups or backup reminders, to tell you a backup finished, failed, or is due.

Portover also declares two install-time permissions used by Android's job scheduler (WorkManager) for automatic backups: run at startup (RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED), so a weekly or monthly schedule survives a restart, and prevent the phone from sleeping (WAKE_LOCK), held only while a scheduled backup is being written. If you never turn on automatic backups or reminders, no backup runs on its own.

Portover does not request:

  • SMS or call logs. Portover does not back up messages or call history and never asks for those permissions.
  • Storage. Saving to Downloads uses the Android MediaStore; "Save to…" and the backup folder use Android's own file picker, which needs no storage permission.
  • QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES. The optional app checklist is built from a standard launcher query, not from the sensitive all-packages permission.
  • Camera, microphone, location, or the advertising ID.

About the network permission

Play's permission list shows network access for Portover. Being precise about why matters more to us than a slogan:

  • Portover's own code never opens a network connection. There is no upload, no sync, no telemetry and no server operated by us for this app.
  • The network permission comes from Google Play's billing library, included to sell subscriptions through Google Play. Portover starts that library only when you open Portover Pro, restore a purchase, or have used Pro on this device before. It is Google's code, it handles the purchase flow, and it never receives your contacts, your calendar or your backup files.
  • After a successful backup, Portover may ask Google Play's in-app review feature to show a rating prompt. Google Play decides whether to show it; Portover never learns whether you rated, and no contact data is involved.

What happens to your contacts

When you make a backup, Portover asks Android's own contacts provider to export the contacts you selected as a standard vCard (.vcf) file, then reads the file back and counts every card to verify it. The file is written to Portover's private internal storage on your device.

From that point the file is yours and nothing happens to it unless you act:

  • Save to Downloads places a copy in Download/Portover/.
  • Save to… and the backup folder let you pick any folder through Android's file picker — internal storage, an SD card, a USB drive, or a folder provided by a cloud app such as Google Drive. If you choose a cloud folder, that app uploads the file under its own privacy policy; Portover itself never connects.
  • Send and Email it to myself hand the file to Android's share sheet or your email app. You pick the destination.
  • Restore and Bring back missing contacts hand a file to your phone's own Contacts app, which does the importing.

Backup files stay on the device until you delete them in Backup history, or uninstall Portover, which removes them with it. Automatic backups keep the number of recent copies you choose; only older automatic copies are removed, never a backup you made yourself. Backup files are excluded from Android's cloud backup and device transfer, so the operating system does not copy them off your phone either.

What is stored on your device

  • Backup and export files you create (.vcf, .ics, .csv, .xlsx), in the app's private storage.
  • Small preferences — your language, whether you have seen the intro screen, labels for the files in Backup history, your reminder and automatic-backup settings, and the folder you chose.

Nothing in this list is transmitted to us. We have no ability to read any of it.

Data processed on your device only

To build backups, exports, the duplicate report and the backup comparison, Portover reads — in memory, on your device — contact names, phone numbers, email addresses, photos, companies and job titles, birthdays, addresses, notes, labels and the accounts a contact belongs to; and, for calendar backups, event titles, descriptions, locations, times and recurrence rules. This processing happens entirely on your phone and the results are written only to files you create.

Payments

Subscriptions are processed entirely by Google Play. Google receives the purchase information under Google's own privacy policy. Portover never sees, receives or stores your card or payment details. There is no server-side receipt check — whether Pro is active is read from Google Play's purchase state on your own device.

What we do not do

  • We do not collect, store or process personal data.
  • We do not use analytics, attribution or crash-reporting SDKs.
  • We do not show advertising and contain no advertising SDK.
  • We do not sell or share data with third parties, because we do not have any.
  • We do not require or offer an account.
  • We do not operate a server for this app.

Your rights

Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to export, correct or delete on our side. Everything Portover stores is on your own device and under your control: delete individual files in Backup history, or uninstall the app to remove all of them at once. If you have purchased a subscription, your purchase record is held by Google Play, and you manage or cancel it there.

Children

Portover is a general-purpose utility. It is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it. If the app ever begins collecting data, this page will say so before that version ships.
