Privacy Policy

Portover is an offline contacts backup and phone-transfer app published by Hugo Software. This policy explains, plainly, what the app does and does not do with your data.

The short version

Portover does not collect personal data. We run no server for this app, and Portover's own code makes no network requests at all — it works fully in airplane mode. There is no account, no sign-up, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising and no third-party trackers. Your contacts and your backup files stay on your phone unless you choose to send them somewhere yourself.

Permissions

Portover asks for two runtime permissions, both read-only, and both only when you use the feature that needs them:

  • Contacts (READ_CONTACTS) — to read the contacts on your device and turn them into a backup file. Portover does not request WRITE_CONTACTS. It cannot add, edit or delete a single contact on your phone.
  • Calendar (READ_CALENDAR) — to read your events for a calendar backup. Portover does not request WRITE_CALENDAR.

Portover does not request:

  • SMS or call logs. Portover does not back up messages or call history and never asks for those permissions.
  • Storage. Saving to your Downloads folder uses the Android MediaStore, which needs no storage permission on Android 10 and above.
  • QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES. The optional installed-app checklist is built from a standard launcher query, not from the sensitive all-packages permission.
  • Camera, microphone, location, or the advertising ID.

If you decline the contacts permission, Portover simply has nothing to back up; it does not nag you and does not stop working elsewhere.

About the network permission

Play's permission list shows network access for Portover. Being precise about why matters more to us than a slogan:

  • Portover's own code never opens a network connection. There is no upload, no sync, no telemetry, no "phone home", and no server operated by us for this app. You can verify this by using every feature with the phone in airplane mode — everything except starting a subscription works normally.
  • The network permission is contributed by Google Play's billing library, which the app includes in order to sell subscriptions through Google Play. That library is Google's code, it handles the purchase flow, and it never receives your contacts, your calendar or your backup files.

If you never subscribe, nothing in the app has any reason to touch the network at all.

What happens to your contacts

When you tap "Back up contacts", Portover asks Android's own contacts provider to export the contacts you selected as a standard vCard (.vcf) file. That file is written to Portover's private internal storage on your device, in a folder called backups.

From that point the file is yours and nothing happens to it unless you act:

  • Save to Downloads places a copy in Download/Portover/ on your device.
  • Send to another phone hands the file to Android's share sheet. You pick the destination — Quick Share, Bluetooth, a cable, a messaging app, a cloud drive. Portover does not choose for you and does not know what you picked. Once the file reaches another app, that app's own privacy policy applies to it.
  • Import into this phone hands the file to your phone's own Contacts app, which does the importing. Portover never writes contacts itself.

Backup files stay on the device until you delete them in the app's Backup vault, or uninstall Portover, which removes them with it. They are also excluded from Android's cloud backup and device-transfer, so the operating system does not copy them off your phone either.

What is stored on your device

  • Backup files you create (.vcf, .ics, .csv), in the app's private storage.
  • Small preferences — whether you have seen the intro screen, the list of backup file names shown in the vault, and your last chosen backup options.

Nothing in this list is transmitted to us. We have no ability to read any of it.

Data processed on your device only

To build backups and the duplicate report, Portover reads — in memory, on your device — contact names, phone numbers, email addresses, contact photos and the account a contact belongs to (for example Google, SIM or Device), and, for calendar backups, event titles, descriptions, locations, times and recurrence rules. This processing happens entirely on your phone and the results are written only to the backup file.

Payments

Subscriptions are processed entirely by Google Play. Google receives the purchase information under Google's own privacy policy. Portover never sees, receives or stores your card or payment details. There is no server-side receipt check — whether Pro is active is read from Google Play's purchase state on your own device.

What we do not do

  • We do not collect, store or process personal data.
  • We do not use analytics, attribution or crash-reporting SDKs.
  • We do not show advertising and contain no advertising SDK.
  • We do not sell or share data with third parties, because we do not have any.
  • We do not require or offer an account.
  • We do not operate a server for this app.

Your rights

Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to export, correct or delete on our side. Everything Portover stores is on your own device and under your control: delete individual backups in the Backup vault, or uninstall the app to remove all of them at once. If you have purchased a subscription, your purchase record is held by Google Play, and you manage or cancel it there.

Children

Portover is a general-purpose utility. It is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it. If the app ever begins collecting data, this page will say so before that version ships.
